- Bulbs & bare-root plantingOct to Mar
Spring bulbs now and tulips in November, then bare-root hedging, roses and fruit trees through the winter.

Why a plantsman
Plenty of people can cut a garden. Fewer know what they're cutting.
Most of the harm done to gardens is done in the name of tidying them. Here are three things that won't happen to yours.
- ×Shrubs sheared into blobs.Forsythia cut in autumn loses next spring's flowers. Every shrub is pruned for how and when it flowers.
- ×Hedges cut into dead wood.Leylandii never regrows from brown wood. Conifers are cut little and often, and hedges are tapered so they stay thick to the ground.
- ×Borders scalped every autumn.Strong stems and seedheads stay standing through winter for birds, insects and frost. Soft growth is cleared.
